12 Simple Ways I Increased My Happiness
Let me start with a question. If you can achieve only one thing in your life then what would it be? Take your time and think about it.
Isn’t it Happiness? If it isn’t, just think again.
Happiness isn’t as hard as it appears to be at times. First, let me bust a myth about happiness, which I used to have.
A Myth About Happiness
I used to link happiness to physical objects, possessions, gadgets etc. If I have this or that then I’ll be happy. If so and so happen I’ll become happy. I haven’t realized that physical comfort is totally different than emotional comfort.
One day, when I was in the final year of engineering. We were celebrating teachers day. After the celebration, we all started dancing. That day I danced like never before. I danced with pretty much everyone present there. I loved it so much and my whole belief system shattered.
That day I realized that happiness doesn’t depend on physical objects. These objects are designed to give physical comfort, not happiness. Happiness can’t be created by external comfort. We need to realize that it is our own internal creation. Also, it can be created irrespective of external objects. HAPPINESS IS A FEELING.
Here is how it used to work:
I used the objects as a stimulus to create a response, which was making me happy. But, the realization was that the response was my own choice. So, I am the creator of my own happiness. Different people create different responses towards the same stimulus.
For example, I want to have a house. I start thinking that when I’ll have my dream house I’ll be happy. I work hard day in and day out. Finally, my dream house is built. So, I become happy. Now imagine that just the next day I lost my car. Now am I still going to be happy?
NO! but my dream house is still there. That means it’s not the house that is giving me happiness. I am creating it.
The thing is clear that this is only a myth, which was holding me back. Below is a list of 12 simple things that increased my sense of happiness and made my life much fulfilling.
1. I Build Strong and Healthy Relationships
I knew that each and every one of us is different. Thus, I started accepting people as they are. By accepting them I am giving them their place. I keep myself away from clashes, constant arguments, and let go of all kinds of resentments. If arguments seem inevitable, I still try and make an effort to understand the situation as well as other person’s perspective.
Focus on your relationships. Try to understand the other person’s point of view. You will definitely have strong and healthy relationships. Which is very crucial, when it comes to being happy.
2. I’m Very Thankful
As soon as, I learned about the attitude of gratitude. I started practicing it. Daily, I have so much to be thankful for. Now, I Take time from my busy schedule to thank those who provide even the smallest thing, people who really matter for me. I start feeling abundance in my life.
Just saying a sincere “Thank you” to people who do small things for you, like a waiter serving in a restaurant, an office guard opening door for you when you leave office late etc. or passing a genuine smile can be a quick happiness booster. By having this attitude, you’ll immediately see that there is a lot of good things in your life.
3. News is Stressful, I consume less of it
When I used to read newspapers in the morning, I felt terrible after reading what is happening around me. On the front page, they have violent news. Now I don’t read a newspaper since last two and half years. Yes, I don’t have enough knowledge about what’s happening around me. But, I always have the information which is of my use. Instead, I read some good book in the morning. This simple thing had an extraordinary effect on my life and mind.
4. I Use My Time Effectively
Time is invaluable and too important to waste. For this, what I do is- from time to time I ask a quality question: ‘What is most important thing to do, RIGHT NOW?‘ and then I think and give a correct reply to this question. I start doing that thing at that time. By using this I get more work done in less time.
5. I Laugh And Laugh Vigorously Everyday
As we have listened many times that ‘Laughter is the best medicine‘. If I hear a good joke? I share that with my friends or family. I laugh as much as possible and whenever possible. Things start to change when I started giving everyone a sincere smile. Sometimes even if I’m feeling bad, I JUST LAUGH!
6. I Share My Feelings, Affections, Friendships, and Passion to People Around Me
I’m blessed to have many great friends and I keep sharing my feelings with them. I suggest that one should have every kind of friend. As they say, ‘Friendship is the only one relation which we can choose‘, so choose your friends and have many friends from all walks of life. By using this I start having a great influence. I keep sharing my stories with them. As much as I share, our bond keeps growing stronger and stronger.
7. Secret to My Happiness is that I Don’t Hide My Anger
I was the one who used to get angry a lot. It was me who used to shout at people around me. I felt terrible after anger. Many of my relationships ended due to it. Then I started hiding my anger and this encouraged people to hurt me more. They kept doing same things which used to annoy me.
Now I don’t show my anger and even don’t hide it. Instead, I find ways of expressing them in a way that will not cause more hurt to anyone. When I get angry, I give an angry look to the other person then I start reading a book or goes for a run. By doing this I instantly cheered up and that other person also knows why I got angry. So he/she doesn’t repeat it.
8. Working Hard Brings Great Personal Contentment
I did many bad things in life. Every time I did such thing, I was free. As they say: ‘Empty mind is devil’s workshop‘. So now I keep myself busy in amazing things. Now I don’t have time to do things which I later regret. Working hard also gives a sense of being capable of doing great things.
9. Learning is a Joyful Exercise
I try and learn something new each day. Learning also widened my horizons. I just try to learn everything in step by step manner. Whatever I love or want to learn, I don’t wait. I just start and learn it. It definitely increased my happiness.
10. I Run, Jog, Walk And Do Other Things That My Body Was Made For
From the time I started exercising, I feel alive. I exercise, even if only for 3 minutes. I take a quick brisk walk, do some jumping jacks, some push-ups, whatever gets my heart going and my lungs breathing more deeply. In even a minute I’ll start to feel better. As we all know that ‘Health is Wealth‘. I run a lot, Recently I’ve finished a full marathon in 3:36:45 and believe me I’ve never been so happy in my life. You’ll definitely feel better about yourself after each physical activity.
11. I Do One Thing At a Time
I found that when I multitask, I get less done. Which makes me feel horrible. Instead of checking e-mail as I work on other projects, I turn off my e-mail function until I finish the report I’m writing. Just focus on one thing at a time.
12. I Regularly Help Others
Most fascinating discoveries about myself so far this year is, how happy it makes me helping others. After helping others I start to feel something different about myself, something good, my self-esteem goes up instantly and I get encouraged to help others more.
These are the 12 simple ways which increased my happiness to totally new level. Just apply these principles and have a happy life. If you can’t apply all these at once, just use them one by one.
